Tyril: Sword for Hire

Postby rincevent » Thu Jan 05, 2023 5:12 am

Tyril: Sword for Hire - While Tyril is active, you may spin this character down 1 level. If you do, prevent all damage to you from target opposing character die (until end of turn).

1- Can you use Tyril's ability anytime you receive damage or only in global ability windows?

2- As it states damage from a character die does it only prevent combat damage or would it work for damages caused by that character die's ability?

Thanks in advance, all the best

This is a reactive/preventative ability. If the controlling player takes damage, you may spin Tyril down to prevent the damage and any further damage from that specific opposing Character die.

How does the card source clarification square with the following rulings:

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13913
https://win.wizkids.com/bb/viewtopic.ph ... 22a955849d

These rulings state an Action die is doing the ability damage.

I understand how combat damage only comes from a die’s Attack value; hence a die is the only source of combat damage. But non-combat or ability damage, depending on the card text, can be applied by a character or action die as well. In those cases, wouldn’t the die be the source of the damage?

If non-combat or ability damage does not require a die to be the vehicle in applying that damage (e.g. when a specific game state or a particular effect occurs the damage ability is triggered), then I understand in those instances the card would be the source of the damage.

In summary, is the distinction of source, with regards to applying damage, more applicable to the type of the damage (combat or non-combat/ability) vice the component?

For example, a die can inflict both combat and non-combat damage and each instance of damage is different. Hence the “source” is more applicable to type of damage. This is important for damage prevention abilities since those abilities are usually predicated on the type of damage.

Appreciate your consideration.

Based on this input, the previous ruling is revised:

Question 1: “Combat”, as a qualifier to the type of damage the controlling player takes, has been removed.

Question 2: The answer is changed to:

This ability applies to any damage, either combat or ability/non-combat, applied by an opposing Character die.

We appreciate your understanding.
