Goddess of Thunder: Thor Corps Question

Postby jourdo2k3 » Fri Apr 28, 2023 2:03 am

Goddess of Thunder: Thor Corps reads:

Goddess of Thunder gets +5 attack while you have another active character die with Thor in the name or subtitle.

Is it possible to get clarification on exactly what “another” means in this situation as it can be read a couple of different ways.

Does “another” mean a completely different character than Goddess of Thunder that meets the criteria, OR could a second copy of Goddess of Thunder satisfy the requirements of this card?

Our play group assumed it was two completely different characters but wanted to be sure about this in the future.

Thanks!

The ability can apply when a second Character die from a Goddess of Thunder Character card is active.

This requires a deeper clarification of the words “another active” compared to the words “different active”.

The words "different active" mean that ability does not count the Character die that has this ability. There must be a Character die from a different Character card in the Field Zone in order for such an ability to initiate. Parsing this further, the word “different" means ‘Character dice other than the Character die applying this effect’, ‘not this Character die’, or ‘different from this Character die’.

The words "another active" mean that ability does count the Character die that has this ability. The word "another" would cover two (or more) separate Character dice from the same Character card.

Note: There are a few cards from the Golden Age with the words “different active” that would include the Character die with this ability (e.g. Green Lantern: Brightest Day, Krypto: Test Pilot). For these cards, the context of the ability allows for the inclusion of the Character die with this ability. However, in most cases “different” is synonymous with “other than this one”.
Only one card from the Modern Age (Wolverine: Tough for the Kids) has the words “different active”, and in the context of this ability, Wolverine would not be included.
