New Rules (2021) Clarifications & Errata

Provided below are some general clarifications to help clarify how wording on Modern Age game elements released prior to the 2021 rules changes will interact with the new 2021 rules. This includes clarifications to some powers and abilities. These clarifications may receive updates if any issues not addressed here are found.

If a game element's wording does not easily interact with these clarifications, or has an interaction that is not addressed by these clarifications, then they will receive their own individual errata.

General Clarifications

References to "at no cost" are now "as FREE".

- This clarification ensures that any action that used to be given “at no cost” now follows the new format of actions being given “as FREE” instead. Note that this will now prevent characters from repeating the same action “as FREE”. Unless a character receives a specific errata stating otherwise, they must be played using the new rules. Also, this clarification applies to powers and abilities not specifically addressed in the Powers/Abilities Clarifications below.


Any map that has printed Obscuring Terrain (white colored boundary line) will now be considered to have printed Hindering Terrain (green and white checkered boundary line) instead.

- Since Obscuring Terrain no longer exists under the new rules, this clarification allows maps with Obscuring Terrain to be used properly.


References to "Named Themed Teams" or "Generic Themed Teams" are now considered to reference "Themed Teams".

- Since there are no longer Named or Generic Themed Teams, this clarification allows effects that look for either of those types of themed teams to function as close to original intent as possible. Note that this clarification does not apply to effects looking for a themed team that uses a specific keyword.


References to "PROTECTED" (all caps) are now considered to reference "SAFEGUARD".

- This clarification shows that the SAFEGUARD keyphrase now replaces the PROTECTED keyphrase, but the effect functions the same as before. Note that this clarification does not apply to the "Protected" (lower case) keyphrase.

Powers/Abilities Clarifications

If a power/ability has an effect that triggers off the use of Leap/Climb, that effect now instead triggers when the character is given a MOVE action.

- Since Leap/Climb is now a passive effect, this clarification allows characters to still use their triggered effects that used to trigger off of an activation of Leap/Climb.


If a power/ability has an effect that triggers off the use of Incapacitate, the effect now only triggers if you chose to use the optional effect of giving action tokens to all hit characters.

If a power/ability allowed the use of Incapacitate “as FREE”, the effect is now instead an effect that states “FREE: Make an attack using Incapacitate and must give action tokens.”

If a power/ability allowed the use of Incapacitate “at no cost” (either within an action or as part of a triggered effect), the effect is now instead an effect that states “Make an attack using Incapacitate and must give action tokens.”


- Since Incapacitate is an effect that triggers when making an attack, these clarifications allow older effects to function as close to original intent as possible.


If a power/ability has an effect that triggers off the use of Quake, the effect now only triggers if you chose to use the optional effect of targeting all adjacent opposing characters (even if there is only one target, you may still choose the optional effect).

If a power/ability allowed the use of Quake “as FREE”, the effect is now instead an effect that states “FREE: Make a close attack using Quake and must target all adjacent opposing characters.”

If a power/ability allowed the use of Quake “at no cost” (either within an action or as part of a triggered effect), the effect is now instead an effect that states “Make a close attack using Quake and must target all adjacent opposing characters.”


- Since Quake is now an effect that triggers when making a close attack, these clarifications allow older effects to function as close to original intent as possible.


If a power/ability states that a character can use the Colossal Stamina ability, they are instead considered to have the following effect: "This character can be given a costed action even if it has two action tokens and does not receive an action token for that action. If you do, immediately after resolutions deal it 1 unavoidable damage and don’t clear its action tokens this turn."

- Since Colossal Stamina is now a retired ability, this clarification allows characters that can use it to function as close to original intent as possible.


If a power/ability states that a character can use the Ram ability, they are instead considered to have the following effect: "MOVE: ;Improved-M; ;Character; . Move in a direct path, then make a close attack targeting all opposing characters moved through this action, regardless of adjacency. Instead of normal damage, each hit character is dealt this character's printed damage value. Immediately after resolutions, deal this character 1 unavoidable damage for each character hit with the attack."

- Since Ram is now a retired ability, this clarification allows characters that can use it to function as close to original intent as possible.


If a character has PROTECTED: Penetrating/Psychic Blast or PROTECTED: Exploit Weakness, it can be targeted with attacks by characters that can use either of those powers but treats the penetrating damage dealt by those effect as non-penetrating damage instead.

If a character has PROTECTED: Incapacitate, it can be targeted with attacks by characters that can use that power but can't be given action tokens by the effect.

- Since Penetrating/Psychic Blast, Exploit Weakness, and Incapacitate are now passive effects, these clarifications allow the PROTECTED effect to function as close to original intent as possible against those powers.

042 Adrianna Tomaz
[E]WIND MANIPULATION: Force Blast, Telekinesis. Once per turn, when Adrianna Tomaz uses either, after resolutions she may use the other one as FREE.

033 Possessor
[E]RUNESTAFF: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. When Possessor hits with a range attack, after resolutions choose one: heal Possessor 1 click -or- give an action token to a hit character.

[E]THE SPEAR OF PROXIMA MIDNIGHT: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. When Proxima Midnight hits with a range attack, a hit character gains Immobile until your next turn.

[E]I'VE LEARNED FROM THE BEST: Close Combat Expert.

042 Black Bolt
[E]SILENCE IS MY REALITY, IT WILL NOT BE YOURS: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. // If Black Bolt is equipped with the [ABPaI] Reality Gem, when he makes a range attack, you may instead target any number of opposing characters within range and line of fire. If you do, instead of normal damage, each hit target is dealt his printed damage value.

056 Kang, the Conquerer
[E](-X) KANG WARS: X is any number up to the number of unoccupied Time Portal markers on the map. FREE: Place Kang, The Conqueror in an unoccupied square with a Time Portal marker then give him a CLOSE or RANGE action as FREE -or- make an attack. After resolutions, remove that marker. Kang, The Conqueror may be given this FREE action up to X times.

063 Champion
[E]WHERE'S THE NEXT CHALLENGER?: Charge. When Champion uses it and hits, after resolutions choose one: Remove an action token from Champion -or- he may make a close attack using Close Combat Expert.

067 Ebony Maw
[E]PERFECT TELEKINESIS: Telekinesis. POWER: Choose an unheld object within 6 squares and line of fire. If you do, pick up and hold that object then give Ebony Maw a RANGE Object Action as FREE modifying attack +2 and increasing the damage dealt by +1.

s001 Reality Gem (Infinity Gem)
[E]EFFECT: This character gains an extra ;Bolt; Perplex, Telekinesis. // When this character hits, if the attack roll was 10 or higher, after resolutions they may generate an object to immediately hold. If you do, give them a RANGE Object Action as FREE. If they continue to hit with an attack roll of 10 or higher, they may use this effect an additional time.

s006 Mind Gem (Infinity Gem)
[E]EFFECT: Modify attack +1. Mind Control, Incapacitate. // When this character hits, if the attack roll was 10 or higher, after resolutions they can use Mind Control as FREE. If they continue to hit with an attack roll of 10 or higher, they may use this effect an additional time.

20.1 Psylocke
[E]PSYCHIC BOW: FREE: Choose one to use this turn: Incapacitate -or- Penetrating/Psychic Blast. // When Psylocke hits with a range attack, after resolutions choose a standard attack or defense power a hit character can use. That character can't use the chosen power until your next turn.

002 Romulan Officer
[E]MODULATING THE CLOAKING DEVICE: Smoke Cloud. When Romulan Officer uses it, you may also generate a hindering terrain marker in each square within range that's occupied by a friendly character with the Romulan keyword. At the beginning of your next turn, remove these markers.

004 Ferengi Trader
[E]FERENGI ENERGY WHIP: Incapacitate. When Ferengi Trader hits with a close attack and used Incapacitate to give action tokens, after resolutions roll a d6. ;Dice5; - ;Dice6; : Deal a hit character 1 penetrating damage.

013 Alidar Jarok
[E]...OR SPY?: If Alidor Jarok is part of a Romulan themed team, he can use Telekinesis, but instead places opposing characters.

019 Gul Lemec
[E]WE HAVE ALL THE EVIDENCE WE NEED...WE HAVE CAPTAIN PICARD: Telekinesis, but instead places opposing characters.

027 Frenzy
[E]TIME TO CLEANSE THE FLATSCANS: Leap/Climb. // When Frenzy is given a MOVE action, if she moved 5 squares or less, after resolutions she may make a close attack using Close Combat Expert.

035 Professor X
[E]OPEN YOUR MIND, ABSORB WHAT CEREBRO HAS TO OFFER: When Professor X uses Leadership, friendly characters with an Influence token are considered adjacent. // When Professor X makes a range attack or uses Outwit, he may target characters with an Influence token regardless of line of fire.

048 Jason Wyngarde
[E]DON'T LET THE DREAMS OF ANOTHER LIFE TROUBLE YOU: Mind Control. When Jason Wyngarde uses it as a range attack, he may count range and draw line of fire from any character he hit this turn and if he hits, after resolutions he can use Mind Control as FREE, but only to target a character he hasn't targeted with Mind Control this turn. If he continues to hit with Mind Control, he may use Mind Control as FREE an additional time.

049 Sebastian Shaw
[E]THE MORE YOU FIGHT, THE STRONGER I BECOME: When Sebastian Shaw is hit, give him a number of Energy tokens equal the damage dealt to him by that attack. // FREE: Remove any number of Energy tokens. This turn, Sebastian Shaw can use the effects listed for that number and lower numbers:
1: He has: “FREE: Roll a d6. ;Dice5; - ;Dice6; : Remove an action token from Sebastian Shaw.”
2: Charge
3: Super Strength
4: Flurry
5: Modify all combat values +1
6: Regeneration as FREE.

G002 Sentinel
[E]KNOCKOUT GAS: Incapacitate. When Sentinel makes a close attack, it may instead target all opposing characters within 3 squares and line of fire, regardless of adjacency, but must use Incapacitate to give action tokens.

G012 Cyclops Sentinel
[E]ENORMOUS OPTIC BEAM: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. // When Cyclops Sentinel hits with a range attack, after resolutions choose one to affect a hit character and all opposing characters adjacent to it: Deal them each 1 penetrating damage -or- Give them each an action token -or- Knock them each back 6 squares.

G014 Proteus
[E]THE GARDEN OF PROTEUS- Once per action for all characters with this trait, whenever a standard character within range is given a costed action, after resolutions you may generate a blocking, hindering, or water terrain marker within 3 squares of that character but not in their square. At the beginning of your next turn, remove all terrain markers generated by Proteus.

G015 Magneto
[E]MANKIND'S DESTRUCTION IS AT HAND: Pulse Wave, Telekinesis. When Magneto uses Pulse Wave, he can use ;Improved-T; ;Blocking; . After resolutions, destroy all blocking terrain within that use of Pulse Wave's range and, if two or more pieces of blocking terrain are destroyed in this way, generate an object. // FREE: Choose an unheld object within 6 squares and line of fire. If you do, pick up and hold that object then give Magneto a RANGE Object Action as FREE.

006 Cannonball
[E]BLASTING OFF: Charge, Force Blast. Force Blast as FREE. // When an opposing character knocked back by Cannonball has its knockback path stopped due to blocking terrain, the edge of the map, or higher/lower elevation, after resolutions remove an action token from Cannonball.

CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE AVENGERS
025 Spymaster
[E]MY ESPIONAGE ELITE: If Spymaster is on a Spy themed team, your maximum number of Themed Team Probability Control uses this game is 6 (instead of 3). // UNIQUE MODIFIER: Friendly characters with the Spy keyword modify defense +1 if occupying hindering terrain.

031a Jolt
[E]CAN'T SIT STILL!: Flurry, Sidestep. When Jolt uses Sidestep, after resolutions roll a d6. ;Dice4; - ;Dice6; : Jolt may use Sidestep an additional time.

044 Ghost
[E]INTANGIBLE SABOTEUR: Phasing/Teleport. When Ghost uses it, after resolutions he may make a close attack using Incapacitate, but only to target any number of characters he moved through this turn, regardless of adjacency, and must give action tokens.

047 Melter
[E]MELTED YOUR WEAPONS: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. // When Melter hits with a range attack, give a Melted token to a hit character if they don't have one already. For the rest of the game, a character with a Melted token modifies damage -1 when making range attacks.

055 Arno Stark
[E]STABILIZING ARMOR FOR MISSILE ARRAY: Sidestep. // At the beginning of your turn, you may choose that until your next turn Arno Stark has Immobile. If you do, until your next turn he has a range value of 12, ;Improved-T; ;Character; ;Elevated; ;Hindering; ;D-Blocking;, and "RANGE: Make a range attack. When Arno Stark does, all opposing characters within range and line of fire become targets and each hit target is dealt 1 penetrating damage instead of normal damage."

058 Immortal Hulk
[E](Additional Trait)YOU WOULDN’T LIKE ME WHEN I’M ANGRY: If Immortal Hulk is on click #1 and is given an action token, after resolutions you may deal him 1 unavoidable damage.

073 Absorbing Man
[E]TAKE ON THE PROPERTIES OF ANY ELEMENT: FREE: Choose an adjacent square's terrain type, and Absorbing Man can use the corresponding powers and abilities until you choose again. (Use the Wall marker as a reminder by placing it on the chosen terrain type.)
CLEAR TERRAIN: Super Senses and modify speed +2.
HINDERING TERRAIN: Stealth, Regeneration and modify attack +2.
BLOCKING TERRAIN: ;Improved-M; ;D-Blocking; . Super Strength, Close Combat Expert, and modify defense +2.

[E]AN ARROW FOR EVERY SITUATION: If Green Arrow’s displayed attack power is Smoke Cloud or Energy Explosion, he can use it as FREE. If it is Incapacitate or Penetrating/Psychic Blast, he has: “FREE: Make a range attack.”

030 Black Canary
[E]CANARY CRY: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. When Black Canary hits with a range attack, after resolutions knock back all opposing characters adjacent to a hit target 2 squares.

055 Stargirl
[E]STARLIGHT SNARES: Once per turn, when Stargirl hits a standard opposing character, choose one: a hit character has Immobile until your next turn -or- after resolutions Stargirl can use Telekinesis as FREE, but instead places a hit opposing character.

010 Yelena Belova
[E]ESPIONAGE: DEFENDING THE WIDOWS: If Yelena Belova is on a themed team, your maximum number of Themed Team Probability Control uses this game is 6 (instead of 3).

043 Living Laser
[E]ABSORPTION OR AMPLIFICATION: When Living Laser is missed by an attack, give him an Absorption token. // FREE: Remove an Absorption token to choose one: Regeneration as FREE -or- make a range attack using Ranged Combat Expert.

SPIDER-MAN AND VENOM: ABSOLUTE CARNAGE
018 Spider-Man
[E]SHOCKING WEB BLAST: Precision Strike. // When Spider-Man is given a MOVE action and moves 5 squares or less, after resolutions he may make a range attack using Incapacitate and may target all opposing characters within range and line of fire, but must give action tokens.

046 Agent Anti-Venom
[E]WAIT! I HAVEN'T CURED YOU YET: Outwit. Once per turn, when Agent Anti-Venom uses it, after resolutions he may use Outwit an additional time but only to target a character with the Spider-Man Family or Monster keyword.

048 Shriek
[E]SONIC SCREAM: Penetrating/Psychic Blast. // When Shriek makes a range attack, targeted characters can't use Super Senses this turn (including for this attack.)

052 Knull
[E]THE GOD OF SYMBIOTES: Plasticity. Shape Change, but succeeds on a 4-6. // When Knull KO's an opposing character, after resolutions heal 2 clicks.

[E]UMBRAKINESIS: Stealth. Smoke Cloud as FREE. // FREE: Place Knull in a square of hindering terrain within 4 squares.

040 Armor
[E](Additional Trait)ARMOR UP: If Armor is on click #1 and is given an action token, after resolutions you may deal her 1 unavoidable damage.

044.02 Magneto
[E][b]TEAM UP: ACOLYTES OR BROTHERHOOD OF MUTANTS THEMED TEAM:[/b] [After establishing themed teams, if Magneto is part of a listed theme team, you may use the following effect:] Once per turn, when Magneto attacks only characters with the X-Men keyword, after resolutions generate an object for Magneto to hold and then give him a RANGE Object Action as FREE. (After revealing forces, you may replace character cards with their alternates. You can't choose a Team Up if your starting characters share a name).

059b High Evolutionary
[E]CREATOR OF THE ANI-MEN: If High Evolutionary is on an Animal themed team, your maximum number of Themed Team Probability Control uses this game is 6 (instead of 3).
