Clarification on Rainbow draft necessary

Postby vonawesome » Mon Mar 16, 2015 10:37 am

Hi there,

At a recent event, the lack of explicit restriction became the topic of debate at our Rainbow Draft event, and I figured getting a clarification here would be the best and most official course of action.

Situation:
We open our 6 packs, sort dice, set the pile, open the other 6, sort dice, make a pile, then proceed to draft. After the draft, one of the payers makes mention that "don't worry about the number of cards your drafted, you can supplement the draft with your own dice to make up the 20", I immediately replied that you couldn't, since it's the nature of the limited format, and a discussion began. Those in favor of using solely what you drafted were the majority (yes, it was put to a vote) and that's how we proceeded, but were informed that in future events, we would be allowed to supplement from our own collections, since the rainbow draft rules do not explicitly forbid this. Mentions were made that "Some draft decks may field less than 20 dice" and "All you have to bring to an even are action indicators, dice, your own action cards and 8 sidekick dice." but the argument was made that it still does not expressly prohibit the use of private collections to supplement drafts.

So, for official purposes, which is correct?
The camp that believes that you should supplement your draft with your own dice to complete 20? or the camp that believes that you draft cards and the dice and that's what you play with?

Personal opinion: I belong to the 2nd camp in the above and believe that given the limited nature of the format, you should be mindful to draft enough copies of a character to be competitive. But would like an official response. and perhaps a clarification posted.

Thank you :)

Ultimately, stores should run events that are good for their players. If there are no house rules in effect, you should expect the dice available at a Rainbow Draft to be limited to the dice opened in those boosters. With both of those in mind, we strongly encourage players to be respectful of the store's view of what events are good for their players. We've had this format for some time now and received no similar questions. There will not be an additional clarifying update from WizKids somewhere else on this subject at this time.
