Can Butterfly (or the character using MASS LEECHING) activate Mind Control as a CLOSE and make a close attack to target an opposing character adjacent to a friendly Butterfly Swarm bystander?

Can Butterfly (or the character using MASS LEECHING) activate Mind Control as a CLOSE and make a close attack to target an opposing character adjacent to a friendly Butterfly Swarm bystander?

While the character may activate the Mind Control as a CLOSE action, a close attack still requires the target to be adjacent. Since the effect does not allow a character to be targeted "regardless of adjacency", non-adjacent characters would not be able to be targeted with the close attack.
